About Me

Honest, loyal, and hardworking, with numerous well established soft-skills, including strong communication and collaboration skills, as well as, time-management and leadership.

My previous career in sales has certainly had its rewards and allowed me to develop, both as a person and as a professional. Software Engineering will allow me to further improve myself, and give me the opportunity to do something I have a real passion for. I love problem solving, such as when I'm fixing bugs in my code, and opportunities to be creative, like when implementing the theme of my first project.

This all adds to the real excitement I have about making the first steps in my career as an engineer, and I would love the chance to work in a full-stack role as I enjoy working both front and backend and would like to continue to grow my understanding in both areas.

Solo Project | One Week

'SH Sports' allows users to add and edit their own clothing products, while also adding items to an orders' cart.

I used Django with Python to build out the back-end functionality for users, products and orders. Using React on the front-end provides a user-friendly and interactive experience for creating and customising items.

Burnt Toast

Group Project | One Week

'Burnt Toast' allows users to review and rate movies, as well as add and edit movies of their choice.

My responsibilities in the project included using Express to build the back-end functionality such as the relationships between schemas, and authentication which limited the amount a user could do depending on if they were logged in or not. I used React to create several pages, such as the profile, registration and log-in pages.

Weather App

Pair Programming | 48 hours

'Weather App' is a React app that consumes a Weather API to enable users to search for weather forecasts based on time, dates and location.

The site provides search results based on the users preferences and, upon clicking on a specific event, gives information like temperature, and weather condition, dependent on the input choices of the user like the date, time and location.

Space Invaders

Solo Project | One Week

I built Space Invaders, with a Star Wars theme, the focus being on replicating the game to the true-life version. Users play the part of Han Solo, fighting a fleet of TIE fighters, in the iconic Millennium Falcon, with sound effects and the famous scrolling intro, using CSS animations, to give it a real Star Wars feel.

My first dev project for the Software Engineering Immersive course and also my first ever project using JavaScript, HTML and CSS. I had lots of fun creating this and it cemented my belief that software development was the career for me.

Experience

Software Engineering Immersive

General Assembly (Sep 2021 - Dec 2021)

This twelve-week course has been one of the most enjoyable and unforgettable experiences of my life. My love for learning combined with a natural understanding of logic and programming fundamentals has allowed me to develop my technical skills at an accelerated rate.

Together with my technical development, the course has given me the opportunity to work with my classmates on various projects, giving me an acute awareness for the value of teamwork and the sharing of knowledge. I have finished the course with a great sense of pride in my achievements and my projects, and an insatiable appetite to continue to learn more.

Sales Executive

Love Energy Savings (June 2018 - July 2021)

My role at Love Energy Savings was in the new business team, responsible for brokering energy contracts between businesses and major suppliers.

This involved hitting monthly sales targets while maintaining high compliance and quality standards. Due to my experience in management, I often assisted the management team and helped improve team stats delivery by introducing and implementing a traffic light system.

Sales Team Manager

Verastar (July 2016 - June 2018)

As a Sales Team Manager, I was responsible for a team of between 12-20 members of staff, tasked with offering multiple products to existing customers.

The role allowed me to further develop myself, improving my skills in communication, time-management, and leadership. Some of my responsibilities included conducting daily meetings, 1-2-1's with staff and working closely with the Sales Director to identify areas to improve overall team performance.

Interests

Films/Series

The majority of my spare time is spent with my family, I have a young son and I enjoy nothing more than spending my weekends with him or settling in with my wife for a Movie night.

I am a massive nerd (the cool kind) and enjoy all the classics, from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to Game of Thrones.

Sport

I enjoy playing any sport, I played a lot of cricket as a teenager and was selected as Captain for the Rochdale Schools Under-16's team. Football is my real passion, whether it was Sunday League in my 20's, my weekly 7-a-side, or even Weekend League in Fifa.

I enjoy the competition and total immersion I get from playing. I try my utmost to stay healthy (not always with a great degree of success), I regularly attend a gym and take Muay Thai classes. I am also a massive Man Utd fan, hence my colour theme.
